Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell received an unexpected late Christmas present this year, with the announcement that he was to be included in the New Years Honours list and gain a MBE.
2010 saw McDowell rise from 50th in the Official World Rankings to a position of 6th when his honour was revealed. A feat that was greatly helped by claiming the US Open in June, becoming the first European to do so since Tony Jacklin 40 years ago, in 1970.
G-Mac was also instrumental in the European victory in the valleys, beating Hunter Mahan to reclaim the Ryder Cup, and also established a new Ryder Cup partnership with fellow countryman Rory McIlroy, which looks to be feared for encounters to come. His confidence was still visible after the Celtic Manor success when he defeated World Number 2 Tiger Woods in a play-off to claim the Chevron World Challenge.
Upon hearing the news, a humbled McDowell responded, "For my achievements as a professional golfer to be recognised in this way is truly special".
