Frequently Asked Questions on being 'New to Golf'

What do I need to wear?

Starting golf can be a daunting task to some people, at Clays we want you to feel as comfortable as possible in our environment. Our casual wear code around the clubhouse is key to the way we want you to feel when having a golf lesson, drink at the bar or hitting golf balls on the range. Whilst on the golf course, we require you to wear proper golfing attire, including a collared golf shirt, golf trousers (no jeans) and soft spike golf shoes. Football shirts are not acceptable on the 18 hole golf course.

Do I need my own equipment or can I hire clubs?

If you dont already own a set of golf clubs or club, we can provide you with equipment to use on either the golf course, driving range, just your putter or short game area. Some charges may apply for certain hire equipment. All of our professionals are aquired with the knowledge to assist you in buying your first set of golf clubs.

How long does it take to play a round of golf at Clays?

Four hours is the estimate most people give for 18 holes. The actual time depends on how busy the course is, how many people you are playing with and how many strokes everyone takes (a round of 72 will obviously be faster than a round of 112). A golfer playing alone on a course that is not crowded should be able to finish in 2 and a half hours or less. A foursome playing a very crowded course might wind up spending 5 or even 6 hours on the golf course.

How old do juniors have to be to play on the 18 hole course?

At Clays we are always encouraging juniors to play on the 18 hole golf course, but if you are under the age of 12 and totally new to golf, we dont recommend you playing on the golf course for the first time without the presence of an adult. Being safe on the golf course is the main priority for our new to golf customers. Our junior golf coaching academy is perfect for juniors of all ages, to start their golfing journey. The junior coaching will not only progress your childs golf game but they will learn the rules and regulations of being safe on the golf course.
